Gelato vs ice-cream
Many people ask us: What the difference is between gelato and ice-cream? Gelato is the Italian method of making ice-cream ("gelato" means "frozen"). Gelato is made differently and had a different consistency to (American-style) ice-cream that is sold in super-markets. Because of the different production process, more milk and less cream is needed for gelato, which means gelato has about half the fat content of other ice creams (8-10 % vs. around 20% in ice cream).
Gelato is also served at a higher temperature than ice-cream which makes the flavour come out much better. Gelato is more difficult to transport and store than ice-cream, which why you will find only ice-cream in supermarkets and bigger ice-cream chains, where the ice-cream is made in on the other side of the world and then transported to the outlet. In contrast, good quality gelato is usually made daily fresh on site, that's when it tastes best, just like at Nom Nom's.
